Liver Detox Diet

Basics

The purpose of a liver detox diet is to eliminate toxins that build up in the liver. On a detox diet liver is cleansed of toxins that build up over time. The liver is the organ that is responsible for filtering toxins out of the blood stream. We take in toxins in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. All of these toxins are filtered by the liver.

On a detox diet, fewer toxins are taken in, so on a detox diet liver gets to rest and recover, because less toxins are taken in. Fresh fruits and vegetables are eaten, or juices taken, preferable organic. Filtered water is taken. Herbal tea is taken, made with herbs that help the liver detox.

Prevention

When you first begin a liver detox diet, you may feel a little ill. That's because toxins will be leaving your body and flooding your system as they leave. To prevent feeling ill, you can prepare ahead of time by eating a healthy diet for a week or two before beginning your detox diet. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes. Limit your intake of junk food and sugar. That way your body is better prepared for the liver detox diet and you may be able to prevent any ill feelings from the diet.

Treatment

There are a number of different liver detox diets from which to choose. Most involve some sort of fasting. Those diets are the best, because they flush the toxins from your system while allowing the liver to rest. On a detox diet liver gets to rest and recover. As mentioned earlier, you may feel a little ill as the toxins leave your liver. The ill feeling will pass in a day or two. Make sure you talk to your doctor before fasting to make sure it is safe for you to do so, because people with certain health conditions should not fast.

There are several types of fasts. On some fasts, people drink water only. Use filtered water. Some people drink water and herbal teas. Choose teas that will help you detox. Dandelion is a good choice, because it helps eliminate toxins and improves liver function.

Then there is the lemonade diet. Add two tablespoons of lemon juice and two tablespoons maple syrup to a glass of water. Drink six glasses per day. You can drink as much plain water as you like.

You can do a juice fast. Drink fruit and vegetable juices. Organic is best. Instead of juice, some people do a fruit fast. Choose one fruit, such as pears or grapes. Organic fruit is best. Eat that one fruit and drink filtered water only.

You can fast for one day or for several days. Three days is a good amount of time for a liver detox diet. Some people like to fast for a few days each month or one day each week. Others recommend a fast every three months, or whenever you are feeling "sluggish."

Some people like to add an herbal supplement to their detox diet. Herbal supplements can help to flush toxins from the system and support optimal liver functioning, increasing the detox diet liver benefits.
