Cherries And Gout

Basics

Many people have heard about the relationship between cherries and gout. The cherry juice gout remedy is one of the most popular home remedies for gout. Although it does not work for everyone, many people have reported very favorable results. So why exactly is the cherries and gout cure so popular?

The key ingredient in cherries and cherry juice that helps gout is flavonoids. Flavonoids help to reduce the uric acid levels in the bloodstream. Gout occurs when excessive uric acid in the blood crystallizes and then deposit in the joints and tissues of the body. Flavonoids also help to prevent the inflammation that results from gout.

Cherries and gout were first linked in a 1950 study conducted in Texas. In this study, 12 gout sufferers were studied. They consumed about a pound of cherries a day (or the equivalent amount of cherry juice), and all showed improvement. Their uric acid levels dropped to normal, and they suffered significantly less gout attacks. In addition, these test subjects reported increased movement in joints that had previously been affected by gout.

Since 1950 several other studies have also been conducted, and the results have been encouraging. In addition to the cherry juice gout remedy, blueberries, strawberries and hawthorn berries also contain flavonoids, and have been shown to be beneficial for gout.

Cherries and gout - Should you try it?

While the cherry juice gout remedy has helped many people, it does not work for everyone. There are many home remedies for gout, and unfortunately most do not help. In the case of cherries and gout though, the results have been encouraging. Why not give it a try, cherries certainly can't hurt you, and they might help. And remember, all forms of cherries are beneficial not just black cherries.

In addition to the cherry juice gout remedy, there are other things you can do to help control the symptoms of gout.

Prevention

By changing your diet, exercising more and adapting a healthier lifestyle, you can substantially reduce the frequency and occurrence of gout attacks. In addition to trying the cherry juice gout remedy, the following can help:

  • Eat foods that are known to be beneficial to gout. They include: Fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables, fruit juices, vitamin C foods (red bell peppers, red cabbage, potatoes), and low fat dairy foods.
  • Drinking lots of water, at least 6-8 glasses a day. This helps to eliminate uric acid from the blood stream.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Try to reduce your weight to a healthy normal level.
  • Avoid foods that lead to increased uric acid levels. They include: Organ meats like liver and kidney, shellfish, herring, anchovies, mushrooms, beans, peas and sweetbreads. Also avoid rich and creamy sauces.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol.
Home remedies for gout will help some people, but the real key to gout relief is thru a healthier lifestyle.

Treatment

As we discussed earlier in our cherries and gout section, home remedies such as the cherry juice gout remedy can help some people. For many others though, medications may be necessary. Most gout medications though do not work very well, or can have severe side effects. For example, Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, high blood pressure, skin rashes, etc. COX-2 inhibitor drugs can adversely affect the kidneys, increase bleeding, increase the chances of heart attacks, and cause hallucinations. Steroids are not safe to use long-term and can have even more severe side effects.

For these reasons, many people prefer to look into natural remedies. Natural remedies have no side effects, and often work as well or better than traditional medications. In addition, natural treatments are safe to use on a long-term basis, and provide the body with other health benefits.
